Ischico Velzel (01-01-1996) was only five years old when she started playing piano. After undergoing initial tuition with Asta Bjornsson and Jacques Hendriks, Ischico entered the Sweelinck Academy for young talented classical musicians of the Conservatory of Amsterdam where she studied with Marcel Baudet. Under the tutelage of Baudet she built the foundation of her piano playing which was continued in the lessons with Frank Peters during her undergrad studies.
Ischico recently finished her Master of Music at Conservatori del Liceu studying with Spanish music expert Albert Attenelle. It was a great experience for her to learn how this style relates to dance, and what this means musically for any such piece. To continue her interest in Spanish music she dedicated her academic research on Isaac Albéniz’s suite Iberia and completed it with a 9 out of 10 (distinction). Ischico received financial support from Het Heij Konijnfonds to help her fund this degree.
Currently she is enjoying her second Master of Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Petras Geniušas and Fali Pavri.
Ischico has played in several concert halls, for example, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam, Musis Sacrum in Arnhem, Sloane Square in London and Casa Battló in Barcelona. She was featured in several national radio programs in The Netherlands.
In 2021 Ischico won first prize in the Lamond Prize, a competition for lesser-known piano works, with her performance of Medtner's Sonata-Skazka. She also won prizes in the Prinses Christina Concours and the Bender Petrof Festival in the Netherlands.
She has participated in masterclasses by Dmitri Alexeev, Jacques Rouvier, Mila Baslawskaya, David Kuyken, Hortense Cartier-Bresson, Stanislav Pochekin, Joanna Macgregor and Håkon Austbø. In summer Ischico often participates in music festivals like Musicalp in Tignes, Barcelona Piano Academy and the Francigena Festival in Altopascio where she performs besides following masterclasses. She is very thankful to have received financial support from the Sophie Booy-baroness van Randwijck fund, the Heij-Konijn fund and the VSBfonds.
In 2019 Ischico ran a successful crowdfunding campaign to fund a part of her second master’s at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She is very thankful for the heartfelt support she has received during this campaign and keeps her donators up to date about her studies.
Besides playing solo, Ischico is very active in playing chamber music. She has studied in the academy of the Scholtes & Janssens piano duo in the Netherlands and has performed in their piano duo festival in the Amstelkerk in Amsterdam. Currently Ischico plays with Dutch/Scottish pianist Anna Michels in the Tableaux Pianoduo. Their most recent performance was during Glasgow's Piano Festival 2021.
